Recital Poem by Dawn Hogarth-burton

Recital

I stood there wrapped in renewed defences
In the warmth of the sun, as the winter had ended,
Among the new growth springing up from the dead
Eyes closed, reciting your words in my head
A gentle breeze from the west was blowing and
Just when I got to that part of the poem
I thought I could hear your whispered words
Amid the sound of the springtime birds
And the stirring of the toadflax seed
That waved blackened spires in the western breeze
For the leveller is coming and I don't know how long
I might have left in this changing world
But I stood and waited closed eyed in the sun
And recited your words till the poem was done.
