Reckoning Poem by Aimanu B. Ali

Reckoning

I tried to evade trouble
but it called on me
like some unexpected guest.
I stepped out.
Now we are face to face
like two chess players
each watching the other
as he makes the move.
He tries to read in my eyes
my heart if numb with fear.
But they are amber now.
He tries to take by the hand
whoever he fixes his eyes on.
A drunken recklessness springs
suddenly out of dark fear
perhaps in tedium
from its prolonged shame
now ready to wipe off
the smug grin from his face.
