Red, Amber, Green. Poem by Rachel Henley

Red, Amber, Green.

We danced under the telephone wires.
Opposite the cafe, under the traffic lights.
Red, amber, green.
Your laughter resuscitated the streets.
I could never utter the words to say.
Just left my heart lead the way.
Our breath visible in the dark night.
There is no language that can demonstrate.
The violent, frequent thumps that occured.
My mind at peace and somewhat comfort.
Yet my thoughts were dazzling and stirred.
You threw your arms around me.
As I am boarding the train,
that leads me to where boys turn into men.

The train pulls away.
Your blood red dress blows in the wind.
I conjure enough courage at last,
To shout words that,
besiege you with my affection.
The train pulls me away.
Your silhouette on the distant platform,
waves to me a goodbye.

Whenever the terror of war,
becomes too much for my human eyes.
I close my eyes and reverse.
Greeting my old friends;
red, amber, green.

Whenever I begin to lose my sight.
My eyes forget to recognise everything,
dark, grey or even white.
I shall seek the comfort of;
red, amber, green.

I do not know what you dream,
or if heaven is what you seek.
I know what I want.
and it lies beneath;
red, amber, green.
