Remember

The little child lay sleeping
On the sands of time-
No more laughter, no frolicking
He lay in eternal peace.

The man groans
Under the burden of the yoke
Goaded on by the falling whiplashes.
Drags himself up
To the distant hilltop
To death and life eternal thereafter.
*** *** ***

Remember me when you are
On the brink of a precipice
Remember me when you feel
The caress of the assassin's
Cold blade behind your neck
Remember me when you smell
The rancid sweat and putrid breath
Of the ravisher in your upturned face.
Remember me when your world collapses
With the doctor's final diagnosis.

Remember me when the overladen
Boat shudders and capsizes
Remember me when the cold waves
Close over your head
And you sink to the Stygian depths.

Remember me when you
Are at forty thousand feet
Dangling at the end of a silken cord
And see the leaping flames above your head
Remember me when you watch
Hands and legs and heads
Fly in the air and scatter around you.
As the mournful drone recedes in the distance
Remember me when border barriers
Bar you from strange lands
Of promise, hope and prosperity.
Remember me when you crawl out
From under the mountain of rubble
Into daylight and life renewed
Remember me when
The supersonic monsters
Come flying over your hamlet
Showering down death and devastation
Remember me when
The last morsel of food is gone
And hunger growls like a wild beast
Before it tears life out of you.

Our world has become a dangerous place for all of us to live. Who is responsible?
