Remember When - Poem by nicole polhill

remember when getting high
meant swinging on the playground
when protection
meant wearing a helmet

when the worst thing you could get from boys
were cooties
dads shoulders
were the highest place in the world

mom was your hero
and your worst enemies
were your siblings

and race issues
were about who ran the fastest
and the only drug you knew
was cough medicine

and when wearing a skirt
didnt make you a slut
and the most pain you felt
was when you skinned your knee

and goodbyes
only meant until tomorrow

and yet
we just couldnt wait to grow up
