Remembered Railway Poem by C Richard Miles

Remembered Railway

The train no longer runs to Addingham
Since Beeching launched his rail-reducing plan.
Though Station Rise still zigzags up the hill,
The track is populated with new-builds
Where arches of the railway bridge once stood:
They are no more, demolished, gone for good
And villagers must catch the hourly bus
To Ilkley for the railway terminus.
Though Addingham has lost its daily trains,
Just up the road a leftover remains:
Enthusiasts have now restored the line
To Bolton Abbey, so defying time,
As steam again can fill the Yorkshire sky.
En route from Embsay, locomotives ply
Their trade in pulling carriages, now filled
With tourists, who are keen to get their thrills
Upon nostalgia’s journey through the Dales
And ride upon the reinstated rails
And one day soon, if all things go to plan,
The train may once more run to Addingham.
