Remembrance Poem by Ekwueme Kelechi

Remembrance

Mother, we still remember the chastisement of your soul
We still remember those whips that caressed the skin of Jesus
We remember the recreated scene of Columbus in the new world

Yes, we're aware of the jewellery they wholeheartedly gave us
The pride that bought our necks, hands and feet
The seizure of our emancipation

We still remember the cry of our Papa
Who was starved at the hands of our grandmother
We we, we know, we know

We know even though we willingly wade into their hands now
Like a sacrificial lamb
Send the gongs into the field to sing songs of remembrance

And the day saw it
She scripted it
On the palms of the air for remembrance

*Papa- Father
