Retreat Poem by Alexander Onoja

Retreat

Your promises were like the first day of April,
They don't seem to mean much anymore.
It has been a difficult lesson but I have learned,
Bribed and bought by the things you adore.

My apologies were never short, even during your mood swings,
Always winning arguments with the splitting of words.
Clever, but not necessarily logical arguments,
And overall, it was never your fault.

I was a slave to your emotions,
In a call, I would be there, like a loyal dog I was.
Slapped, but still, I turned the other cheek.
Made me a fool with many flaws.

Talk is cheap, so I walked away,
And I do hope you find inner peace.
And if you change your mind and do return,
Just know the dog has lost its loyalty, and now roars
