Re-visitation

To return
to the past
through clouded lenses
distorted imagination
to recover
only broken hopes
and promises

time is torment
vicious and potent
with a sadistic agenda
such harsh words spoken

where love
never did belong
and all that's left
is a melancholic song

yet memory
is relentless
oppressive and strong

the heart
oh blame the heart
that once
did love too much

so many have lost
and will die in disquiet
love exacts
the highest cost
