Riding A Distant Wave Poem by Anitah Muwanguzi

Riding A Distant Wave

I made the choice not to store my heart with you,

growing musty and moldy in your keep.

I made the choice never to invest my thoughts in you.

You. So fickle and flighty

with fake diamonds for eyes

roving over every female with appreciation

falling in love as often as you blink

I paid homage to my heart,

when I exorcised myself of any tethers to you

and the tremors, and quivers and shudders and splinters and- and

and earthquakes of my love

and my heart the writing on my sleeve

Still I made the simple choice not to love you

not to invest my soul, my being, my virtue, my heart in you

I make that choice everyday in spite of you

In spite of me.
