Rioting, Englishly Poem by Victor Keegan

Rioting, Englishly

Rating: 4.5

Like a river that breaks its banks
Unpredictably, causing havoc in the ranks
So England has its riots:  Englishly
To preserve the dialectic of history
Our inner pysche hits the streets
Rummaging and  looting they have their say
While the rest of us clear up the next day
Seek not causes for what's gone amiss
Because  It's always been like this
Stuff happens from time to time
It can't be seen as merely crime
It's one way we have to try to salve
Our violence with an escape valve
We cope when those we've ignored let rip
By keeping our stiff upper lip
For in this land of tea and honey
Cricket and periodic riots
Kids get banged for stealing money
While  banks get away with large scale larceny
Don't try to explain what you see
For it will always keep its mystery
We avoid revolution it would seem
By allowing the underclass to let off steam
So the rest of the world can see
We do things here Englishly,
Englishly
