Rise Above It Poem by Stephen Omolori

Rise Above It

Mother died during childbirth
Father died few years after
And your smile got stained by a dirt
Never giving you any cause for laughter
Rise above it

You've got a deadly cancer
And your hairs won't stop falling
Like a tired and famished dancer
Making you wonder why your health is crawling
Rise above it

You've failed your examination again
And you feel dejected for this
And it's driving you insane
Making your pride to miss
Rise above it

You've not eaten for days
With your ribs coming out
And your veins appear out of place
While your hope for a meal goes South
Rise above it

You've lost hope
And the trust in yourself
Thinking of suicide with a rope
Because you weren't born into wealth
Rise above it

You've never been respected by anyone
And it makes you feel bad
Unworthy of shining like the Sun
As you sob in a state so sad
Rise above it

You've been raped by your date
And you start to see man as a beast
Totally deserving of your hate
Like starving lions on a feast
Rise above it

You're the one everybody jokes about
Especially for your fashion sense
Not giving you the benefit of the doubt
Or opportunity to make defence
Rise above it

You've been seen as a fool
Because of your honesty
And decision to tell the truth
And show others respect and courtesy
Rise above it

You've been left alone
Abandoned on this large stage
With audience who don't see you as their own
As your heart flips like a notepad's page
Rise above it

You've past the age of twenty four
And you don't know where you're headed
Making you see life as a iron door
Shut at you as you beg for bread
Rise above it

You've never had any reply
Even after the letters you wrote
Then you wished you were a bird in the sky
So you'd just fly above a seafaring boat
Rise above it

You've never been told that I love you
And this got you wondering if you'd ever will
Or if you'd ever see a love so true
So you consider a pill
Rise above it

You're a single mother down the street
Who everyone sees as loose
And it brings you shame and defeat
Because it wasn't the life you chose
Rise above it

You're called a drug addict
Because your eyes are deeper in the daytime
Like the holes dug by a rabbit
And it's worse if you love to rhyme
Rise above it

You've come out from a ghetto
With doubt telling you you'd fail
While timidity just won't let go
And your courage refuses to sail
Rise above it

You've contemplated suicide
Because it feels like no one cares
Or want to be by your side
So alone you face your fears
Rise above it

Smile after the heartbreak
And watch as the scars heal
Because tsunami and earthquake
Can never quench your zeal
When you rise above it

POET'S NOTES ABOUT THE POEM
This poem was inspired when I saw my result in one of the exams I wrote. I was devastated and depressed, but my Muse inspired me immediately. I felt I could use the sad experience to uplift the spirit of people going through something worse.
