Road Ahead Poem by Rachel L. Z.

Road Ahead

You can't fake that surprise in your voice
Every time you hear I've succeeded.
I'm better than you thought I'd ever be
I'm stronger than you'd like

To you, it only matters what the world views you as
While I just don't care
Good luck with that logic ten years from now
When your grandkids barely know you exist

I'm gonna grab those keys off the counter
Sprint barefoot to the car
Drive like I never have before
Forget about the stupid mirror hanging above my head
That's what the road ahead is for

You've spent years building a cage around me
I've spend just as long tearing it down
What will you do now that my blindfold's gone
I guess that's your mistake to fix.

I'm gonna grab those keys off the counter
Sprint barefoot to the car
Drive like I never have before
Forget about the stupid mirror hanging above my head
That's what the road ahead is for.

The great stretch of highway I see through the windshield
Outweighs the miles left behind
So many places I could choose to go
I'm finally in the driver's seat.
