The road to the falls stretches
all the way to Marshfield, Vermont.
The map shows it straighter than
the one I remember;
straighter than the one
that brought me to where I am now.
It's paved, except for the last quarter mile,
fewer bumps and detours,
but still dotted with places to stop and rest;
places that no longer tempt me to stay.
Roots here are shallow
thriving in rich, moist soil
longing for the harsh New England winter.
