Sailing by Starlight
At dusk I walked a well worn trail,
And fell upon a ship to sail,
It sleeping on the sandy shore,
I cast it off in nighttime pale,
Unlike the days I've sailed before,
I swept over a moonlit floor,
The water same as sky with waves,
But boats prefer the water more,
And I would join the stars that bathe,
If just to touch the light they gave,
Had I not ship on which to stand,
To keep from me the cold it brave,
The rising sun did then demand,
That I again return to land,
Ashore where points it's beaming hand,
I leave the boat to lie in sand.
