Seven Miracles Of Leonard Cohen Poem by Paul Hartal

Seven Miracles Of Leonard Cohen

His music is tender and poignant
Comforting current Psalms
Bitter sweet melodies
That console broken hearts.

He stayed in her place at the river
Suzanne was beautiful and kind
But he touched her perfect body
Only with his mind.

In loneliness, holy or broken
He turned the profane to sacred
A victory over suffering
His songs strip the soul naked.

With a burning violin
To the end of love he danced
From the horrors of Auschwitz
Beauty and sorrow pranced.

Performing to huge audiences
He enthralled more than a few
His magic turned the motley crowd
To one extended Jew.

Kill the flame? Who wants it darker?
Embrace struggle and conflict?
Yet Man, he said, remains on the Cross
So either resist or accept the verdict.

Still Leonard found a blaze of light
In every root and word
He praised the Lord till the end
Singing Hallelujah, undeterred.

POET'S NOTES ABOUT THE POEM
The Canadian poet, novelist, musician and painter Leonard Cohen was born in Montreal in 1934 and died in 2016.

A multi-talented genius, he views artistic creativity as a mysterious process. He explains that the seeds of the song 'Dance Me To The End Of Love' come from the Holocaust. In the Nazi death camps orchestras of inmates were forced to play classical music while prisoners were murdered in the gas chambers and burnt in the crematoria.
