Shamash Poem by Menachem Rephun

Shamash

In the park the leaves are damp, the wind sweeps them into pools
Where the rains of autumn come, I hear the children singing
The dark pines tower, trees without leaves
a girl with black hair at the end of the path, we hide together
under the veil of the sky and the stars burn
the light of the shamash burns across the water
calling for us now, teach me to sleep with my eyes open
please don’t leave and don’t forget
wait until everyone has gone
with candles burning in the window,
are you listening, behind the door
do you remember, is it too late
