She Was Only 17 Poem by Melecia Williams

She Was Only 17

When he told her she was beautiful he said she had something different
something quite unusual

She was only 17
When he held her hand and kissed her cheek and told her, never had he tasted anything so sweet

She was only 17
When he told her that he was in love
and that she was the only girl he was ever thinking of

She was only 17
When he loved her in the dark
and he said that nothing will ever tear them apart

She was only 17
When she began eating for two
and he told her he loved him, just as much as you

She was only 17
When he started playing games
and told her those other girls would never mean the same

She was only 17
When she began to feel worthless
and she said to herself I do not deserve this

She was only 17
When her whole life was here
and she said to her son, 'Mommy loves you Amir'

She was only 17
