Shoe Stealer Poem by Derek Kuborn

Shoe Stealer

I can remember places where we would vanish around everyone.
Become completely invisible to others if you will.
And I'd feel utterly invincible in your presence.
I was lost in joyous celebration.
And I didn't want to be found.
I was however found, by a man in a suit next to you.
And your love for him dances up my spinal chord.
And I can't stand the sheer pain of these moments.
And you'd unknowingly flaunt your smiles around
Like I was born without a heart.
You gave me the power to create rivers.
And these monsters of land would take their drinks from them,
And I'd sigh and glare and hope for better things.
But nothing will beat you and nothing is better.
And I can't wish for anything else.
And so I'd free fall from heights unimaginable into beds of lilacs.
My existence is futile in mid air.
And these thoughts collapsed in my mind for words you have for other men. The pressure is far too much,
And my eyes dropp out leaving empty sockets from the devil.
He laughs in a wonderful tone, grins and whispers bad news in my ears.
News I had already foreseen in my psychic subconscious.
My eardrums are beating through my skull
Through brick walls I had lain down forever ago.
Despite all my glory and wishful thinking I am nothing anymore.
And it will remain that way until men in suits turn into ghosts in shells.
And at that moment I'll tell them they can keep my shoes and I'll keep theirs.
