Shopping For The Perfect Card Poem by Laurence Overmire

Shopping For The Perfect Card

Rating: 5.0

Pretty cards inked with flowers, beaches, boats and such
Do not express
What lurks within the heart
There are no sugar-sappy words for
Pain. Grief. Loss.

Violation.

We hallmark our relationships with illusions
Saccharine sentiments
To sweeten the bitter taste of salty unshed tears
Festering
In the wounds of famil-i-ar
Battles lost, never won.
