Simple Poem by Aimee Kiefer

I like you a whole lot.
It sounds childish, but it's true.
I am sure there are more beautiful ways
to say that, but sometimes, certain things
are so simple, you just have to say them.
It rolls off my tongue with ease,
like thewy are the first words I learned to speak-
a language I have known all my life.
Maybe twenty-three is too old to have a crush,
and maybe it is a bit childish,
but my heart is a playground and I want to
push you on a swing set until your feet touch the sunset.
I want to be awkward and innocent with you,
as we trace the maps of each other's bodies
looking for all the buried treasure we believe
to be hidden in birthmarks and old scars.
If it is childish, then I am a kid again,
with a schoolgirl crush and one extra special
valentine that I am going to lay on your desk,
hoping you check the box marked 'yes'/
I just like you a whole lot,
and I'm sure there are more beautiful ways
to say that, but sometimes,
you just have to say it.
