Sir Edmond Hillary Poem by Francis Duggan

Sir Edmond Hillary

With Tenzig Norgay the first person to climb Mt Everest Knighted by the British Queen
The Great Sir Edmond Hillary his like seldom seen
A giant of a man in more ways than one
Respect in his lifetime he earned and won.

Some marvellous things in his lifetime he done
Edmond Hillary remains as New Zealand's favourite son
An athletic fellow he stood proud and tall
But to the scythe of the reaper he too had to fall.

His son Peter too climbed Mt Everest a remarkable feat
The historic family double he did complete
In the history of Humankind their mark they made
For the Hillarys there's been many a parade.

Sir Edmond Hillary has died at eighty eight
As a mountain climber he was a World great
With Tenzig Norgay he stood on Everest Summit more than fifty years ago
And still the legend of the great man does grow.
