Sleep Poem by Raymond Farrell

Sleep

Rating: 4.0

I remember sitting on the sofa
Watching my dog sleeping
Stretched out on the nearby rug
Suddenly his legs would twitch
At times he'd whine or whimper
Sometimes he'd bark softly
And move his legs as if running
At times he'd curl his lips
Bare his teeth and growl
I thought, what do I do
When I am sleeping
Amazing to think
Nearly a third of life is spent sleeping
And yet we recall so little of what happens
Perhaps, we remember a vivid dream
But how we move and the positions we adopt
The sequence of movements
None are remembered
The dramatic changes
Between rapid eye movement sleep
And the other stages of sleep
Changes that impact breathing
Heart rate and other physiological functions
We remember nothing of these
Sleep a necessary state for all people
And yet each individual
Knows little about themselves
When it comes to sleep.
