So Nocturnal Poem by Richard Sopko

So Nocturnal

We slept in caves so the sun's rays wouldn't burn our face
Scurried through high wheat fields the hanging moon joins us
He guides us like a caring mother's hand on ours
Tonight he is our companion to the chase
We cover our new shoes in the upturned dirt
One trillion worms crawl out beneath our feet
They have no fear the night is here
Only when the wind blew hard did we stop
To breath, so clear and so deep, so pure
Never do we pause long for there is such a ways to go
Through hard shallow breathes we push on with smiles
How sinister they look in night how fitting they are
In valleys of brittle thorn bushes we laugh
Caught only in our blasted egos as we twist to escape
You ask 'Are we almost there? How much further? '
I take you by the hand and we run to the snow capped mountains
Far in the distance there are candles burning in a million windows
For each home there is a mother and a father and two children
'It is never much further, it is always quite near.'
I squeeze your hand as we make the leap twenty million feet
Soon we are caught up with the chase once more
Our arrival date has been forgotten as we stop to rest through day
I tell you as we rest our head against this new cave's rocks
'I will always travel with you, though the journey is quite long.'
