Soliloquy Poem by Robert R. Railey

Soliloquy

Soliloquy
(One man's thoughts about Life)

One day while I was deep in thought I found myself trying to fathom a reason for our existence on earth; why are we here, I asked? And what's my main purpose in life?
Though without a doubt we can all assume that a question of that nature has been asked since time immemorial
But just as the philosophers and theologians of old have said, we are on this earth to serve God and our fellow man but that only takes up just a portion of the day
But what they don't tell us is what we should do with the rest of our time; that is, once the workday and the serving are over
So to me, it seems as if the most difficult choices a person ever has to face is what to do with our leisure time: for without a doubt, it's when nothing of importance is in front of us that those terrible thoughts of impending doom seem to overtake our minds; and that's also the time that we'll desperately need the tools which help us to quite the negative thinking
Having said that, the best part of the day has to be when we have had the chance to do something nice for somebody else
Albeit, those are the easiest kind of days but the ones I'm speaking of are those days when the loose ends can just about drive a person crazy
And yet, if you were to ask our dear friend Phoebe as to how to handle a problem of that nature, then she'll most likely speak of the glory of Heaven; but never fear, her friend Old George will always be there to set you straight
He'll tell about you his version of the truth, alright, or at least the way he sees it; and he might even say that there's no mystery involved you just do your time on earth and wait
On the other hand, though, some of us hope that there's more to life that just waiting; for if we really were made in his likeness, as the scriptures say, then life surely can't be all labor and toil with only a few minutes of pleasure
So therefore, I believe that I'll pick up the banner and the sword and become a missionary; but what's more likely, though, I'll continue to sin and then try to get to Heaven later
