Sometimes I Gaze Into The Mirror Poem by Mohammad Younus

Sometimes I Gaze Into The Mirror

Sometimes I gaze into the mirror,
Hoping to see my true self in the reflection.
How can the true self and outer self
Escape the illusion of being separate,
opposing entities?

In essence, they are one entity.
I spend time lost in my reflection,
Wondering where the connection faltered,
Why my outer self no longer mirrors my inner truth.
I devised many plans to uncover my true self,
Yet each failed, as I erred in seeing,
the inner and outer selves as distinct— You and I.

Now, I am in a dilemma:
Is it only you, or only I?
No, you and I are facets of the same coin.
Let it be known—
there is one truth, one reality.
We were introduced to the dance of love.
I love you, and you find joy.
You love me, and I find joy.
You are content.

Is this the test of my love for my true essence?
Should I merge into you, in the dance of love,
I am your lover, and you my beloved.
How can I abandon this dance?
Where could I leave this love?

I should have heeded the warnings of people,
'love can drive one mad! '
So now, I pack my dreams of finding you,
Realising that the lover and the beloved are not two.
One who seeks unity cannot evade this stark truth.
