Song Of The Northern Poem by Michael Pruchnicki

Song Of The Northern

Once known to anglo-saxon warriors
as the pitiless pike -esox lucius-
for its similarity to the weapon,
a metal spearhead on a long shaft;

and as luce the waterwolf to others
the freshwater gamefish known
by today's anglers as northern pike
attacked swans, men and mules
in early tales of derring-do!
