Using even now a spring quilt and a summer pillow
in the early autumn air
at one cold blow,
I woke up after a nap and feel an indescribable taste of parting drear.
Toss and turn in my bed with sleeplessness mere
I sit up and lie down repeatedly
and counted the claps of the watchman's clapper without cheer.
Yet I've failed to have a second of sleep simply,
and a night appears as long as a year to me.
Once I intended to draw rein in my steed
and ride back to my native place.
But for living, for fame and for an honorable scholarly deed
I can't give up halfway by making a wild goose chase,
Time and time again I've pined and yearned for your face and grace,
and I've tried everything to drive it away futilely.
Helpless, I can only allow loneliness and vacuity myself embrace.
Of your sad tears I'm unworthy,
I'll put you at bottom of my bosom till doomsday secretly.
