St Kabeer's Couplets 42: Frittered At A Farthing's Worth

Nights lost out O in sleeping,
Days, eating and enjoying,
Of diamond's worth was thine birth,
Ye frittered at farthing's worth.

Given here under is the original couplet in Hindi and its transliteration in English Roman.

रात गंवाई सोय के, दिवस गंवाया खाय,
हीरा जन्म अमोल सा, कोड़ी बदले जाय.

Rāta ganvāī soye ke, divasa ganvāyā khāye,
Hīrā janma amol sā, kođī badale jāye.

It is as if a night is spent in sleeping, and the day in eating. Priceless was your human birth; you wasted it and spent it at farthing's worth.
