Still The Past Forever Is The Past Poem by Francis Duggan

Still The Past Forever Is The Past

Our lot in life can be of our own making or due to circumstance
And it would be nice so very nice to get a second chance
But we do not get a second chance to correct the past for the clock keeps ticking on
From the past we can only learn for the past is forever gone.

If I only did this or I only did that the failed business man say
I would still be up there at the top of the social tree today
But he cannot correct his mistakes though he can start off again
The past forever is the past and that fact will remain.

The hands of time we cannot turn back no matter how we try
The clock keeps ticking on and on the days and weeks go by
The years leave their mark on all of us and to father time we bow
And the past forever is the past we must live in the now.

If I only did this or I only did that how different my life might be
But time as ever ticks away and time did not wait for me
My past mistakes I cannot correct but from them can only learn
And in memory only memory to the past we can return.

Our lot in life can be of our own making or due to circumstance maybe
Though perhaps who knows a greater power decides our destiny
And though we cannot correct our past mistakes we can start and try again
Still the past forever is the past and as the past will remain.
