Stuck In Between Poem by William McGehee

Stuck In Between

I lost my chance for sainthood
On a Monday afternoon.
I just missed the bus for heaven
And they closed up too damn soon.

So I bought another ticket,
Headed down the easy path
But when I showed up on his doorstep
The Devil just had to laugh.

He said "Son, don't got no vacancies
Not a bunk for your to fill.
We've just been bursting at the seems
Since God gave earth free will."

Well no one wants this sinner
Since they put me in the ground
So I'll just head back to the bar
And have another round.

The good preacher offered mercy,
But the harlot offered love.
I tried to drink my fill of both
But could not get enough.

Lord Jesus walked with sinners
While Satan herds the Sheep
And when they lay my soul to rest
It's sure ain't theirs to keep.

Now if you're looking for salvation
But you find a little sin
Don't worry ‘bout which side you're on
‘Cause neither's gonna let you in.

Well no one wants you, Sinner,
And you're stuck deep in the ground.
So find a seat here at the bar
I'll get another round.
