Suddenly Poem by Morgan Michaels

Suddenly

Rating: 4.0

Much to the surprise of passers-by
the church doors burst open. Out flew the bride
hoisting yards of satin,
sobbing and shedding veils
like a gardenia come undone;
swearing and flowing
down a fountainhood of stairs
on thousands of feet; and dove
into a white stretch-limo, parked on the street
followed by the groom who stopped and stood
baffled on the portico.

The driver woke up and said 'where to'?
'Anywhere', she cried, 'it's up to you'-
and not a backward glance she threw-

I can't understand folks
who insist on reasons for things-
when often there's none;
or when the reasons given aren't the real ones-
most things happen by chance
or intent nefarious
a prettier reason coined later
to justify event;
mostly a thing just IS-
if we could only see it.
But, in this case, there definitely was-
a reason, that is-
presumably a good one.

But we'll never know it- you nor I,
any more than will the frozen passers-by
who after their initial shock
again began to walk.
