Summer Nights Poem by Thomas McKelvey

Summer Nights

We hid
from the heat, and prying eyes
in the back seat
of your sister's best friend's car
in the parking lot
of the shopping mall
your sister and her friend
sitting in the front, exchanged glances
and you
so dangerously close to me
fingers entwined
like the young vines we were
tasting the sweetness of fruit
on our lips
and from the driver's seat she handed us our first drinks
Jack and Coke
a shuddering sip slipping into our backs
giggling as we poured out the rest
in pursuit of dizzying kisses and perilous touches
