Sunshine In My Skies Poem by Victoria Gauci

Sunshine In My Skies

When you were conceived it was for me,
The greatest day of my life,
Forever and always all I wanted to be,
Was a mother and a wife,

I raised you up as best I could,
Even though I was alone,
Certainly I had a husband,
But your father was never home,

For the first seven years you were alone,
Then God blessed me with another child,
I couldn't have asked for anything more,
My life was now worthwhile,

I was the best Mom I knew I could be,
But I was never good enough,
No matter how hard I tried to be,
I was a diamond in the rough,

Parents everywhere makes mistakes,
No matter how many books we read,
Despite our sincerest efforts,
Our children can make us bleed,

Clearly we give ourselves away,
Giving our children our best parts,
Unconditional love and acceptance,
Which comes from deep within our hearts,

Now here you are all grown up,
And the road before you is unknown,
I can only pray that I've given you,
Good examples in what I've shown,

Don't be too quick to judge me,
For you don't know the whole story,
Children aren't supposed to know,
We don't do it for the glory,

Childhood should contain the fairy dust,
That keeps you focused in the play,
A parent's job is to make it so,
The magic lasts all day,

When you become a parent,
And I pray someday you will,
You'll realize all that it involves,
It takes sacrifice and skill,

Easily you've come to judge me,
On something you know nothing about,
When your time comes you'll realize,
Everything I went without,

And how I'd do it all again,
In the winking of an eye,
You and your brother are my loves,
You're the sunshine in my skies.
