Sustaining Poem by Lonnie Hicks

Sustaining

You twirl me around
I shouldn't like it but I do.
You press my face against the now
and I shouldn't like it
but I do.
You make me want to do
things I shouldn't
You make me want to give you
what I shouldn't
You don't ask
except with your eyes
the best way of asking
and I
suggest to you things
for my go-away bag
that I am not even sure
of what they are
or what they mean.
I like the surprise
and the shock
of what transpires between us
not love
but its underpinnings
and I like underpinnings
because they can be
sometimes the foundation
of the new, the exciting
and in love
the sustaining.
