anchor to windward = to sign on as crew with the intention of staying for a length of time
Mighty Fitz = Steamer Edmund Fitzgerald,729 ft bulk ore freighter, sank in a storm on November 10,1975 off Whitefish Bay in Lake Superior - All hands lost.
