Sweating The Details Poem by JAMES T. ADAIR

Sweating The Details

I'm taking a break from cleaning
Working like a dog today
I sat down and sweat is pouring off me
It's just one of those hot, humid days
In a house without air conditioning
Who would love me when I'm sweating
I wonder if anyone could
But I think if she could...
If she did....
That really would be love
I might be tricked into believing in it
I feel so solitary today
But I do remember this:
I was in a speedskating club for a brief time
That was a nice moment in time
Even then I was past the age of most of the members
and one woman there was so kind to me
She was one of the club leaders
She was kind and encouraging
I was talking to her after some fast laps
Even on ice, I was sweating from the workout
She had beautiful brown eyes, I remember
And short chestnut brown hair
She had a red fleece vest and black speed tights
and a fancy pair of European skates
Unexpectedly she wiped the sweat from my face with her bare hand
Sad, I think that was the sweetest thing that any woman ever did for me
That was years ago!
I must have looked like I had just seen a ghost
You can fall in love in a moment
And sometimes that moment is never forgotten
Men have dreams of love
But sometimes they are just that...
A woman can change a man's life
Can make it a treasure and a joy
Or can crush what was good in him
But the blame will fall on me
