Take Back Nothing Poem by Andrus Cassian

Take Back Nothing

"Take it back! "
I shouted in protest, in earnest
to defend my honesty, personal integrity
Truth be told I don't know why
what she spoke was true
I'm a fool, I'm no good
at least that's what I believe
but this world is much more grand than me
so I do all I can to help others succeed
or at the very least try to aid them to be happy
yet here I stand being chewed out to the core
by the one I adore
for the empty promises I let fall to the floor
let her walk to the door
shouting every obscenity she conjure from obscurity
Here I thought she was purity
Is this what she really thought of me
a lowlife with no dreams
I thought she'd be the death of me
to die happy in her arms
that's what those vows meant to me
that's what the ceremony was supposed to be
a sign of forever, a fairytale beginning
a happily ever after
not the beginning of disaster
Now it's boiled down to this
I, beaming at my doorway
because she's finally leaving today
I have the whole place to myself
The toxicity is dissipating, there's room to breathe
there's room here…too much room…
So uh what do I do now…
Guess I'll follow suit
Follow the sun and the moon
go run and chase the sunset
burn off the excitement
for I know once the moon shines
so will my decline
Allow me one drink tonight
