Taking Inventory Poem by Lora Colon

Taking Inventory

Throughout the years, friends have been few,
Currently, maybe one or two,
I never get close enough to make foes,
I keep my distance, as the saying goes

No birds, cats or dogs live in my house,
(I wonder, should I include that mouse?
It's not likely he's here to stay....
He'll be gone by the end of day)
Much like the happiness I have known -
I'd wake at dawn to find it had flown

But what resentment swells inside me
Thinking of all that was denied me:
True love, contentment, happiness,
A hand to hold, a loving caress,
The passion with which I long to be kissed.......
Alas! I've none of these treasures to list;
Such poverty I'm ashamed to declare,
My heart is starving - the cupboards are bare

I've more than enough of pain and sorrow,
Plenty for today, some for tomorrow;
A broken heart and a bucket of tears -
So little to show for seventy-five years
