Teen Life Poem by Alyssa Wanii

Teen Life

They say adolencese is the time in our lives where we “change”, mentally, and physically.
They say we’re learning how to be adults, and how to be our own person.
They say if we have any questions, or need any help, to go to them.
After telling us that, they left us, to fend for ourselves, and learn for ourselves.
That is until celebrities started acting up, and the number of pregunat teenagers started going up.
Now we’re all they can think about.
The freedom they once gave us, to make our own mistakes, and to become our own people, has disappeared.
They fear our futures.
They fear our personalities.
They fear our being.
Do you really think, I would give myself, to a boy so willingly.
Have you forgotten, I put up fights, for everything that I’m not okay with.
I know they want me to be safe.
I know they want me to be smart.
But do they really know what they want for themselves?
Whenever I say, “Don’t you want me to grow my wings, and fly away someday? ”, you always reply, “You know that we’re fine with you staying with us, forever.”
But are you really okay with that?
Or is your fear for my future, blocking your reasoning for your future?
You’re always telling me, that this time in my life is when I should have fun, and be myself, but then you go, and tell me I can’t do this, I can’t do that, when you know perfectly well, that I’ll be fine.
You treat me like one of your friends, and then you go back, and treat me like your child.
I know this is 2008, and everything has changed, but if you don’t show me that trust I have in you, I might just do what you hope I’ll never do. I might just go back on my promises, and do what I want. So please while I’m still young, and I’m still being molded into whom I’m supposed to be, show me the same amount of trust that I show you, and my friends, and my family. It’s not that hard, it might take awhile to develope, but we all need patience. The talks, you give me, and the movies you show me, so I can see what can happen if I let my guard down, are all helping me, but the big thing that will help me, and every other teenager in the world, would be knowing that you trust us.
