Terra Firma Poem by Henry Igbinedion

Terra Firma

Caressed at night

By the moon's gentle beams
Hugged warmly at noon

By the Sun's infinite fluorescence
She floats endlessly

Driven by the Maker's unseen hand.

Irrigated by the enduring waters

Of her travelling Rivers

And nourished by

The teeming life of her blue Oceans.

Our world,

Cratered by the opulent peaks of the Everest

The Kilimanjaro, and the icebergs; but

Would Junior see the majesty of the arctic?

Would Junior see the snow capped mountains of my youth?

We have dug a hole in the roof of our home

The Land of the Mandinkas

The habitat of the Caucasians

And the domicile of all Orientals;

Would Junior see the lush forests of the Amazon?

We have martyred our world for greed

Like rabid dogs, devoured her insides

And ripped to shreds her Amazonia blanket;

Would Junior see the glory of the simmering desert?

The scintillating brilliance of waterfalls

Rather the epitaph of a boiling cauldron and

A hole in the roof?

Would Junior see my beautiful world?
