The Ascent Poem by Weldon Davis

The Ascent

The shadows engulf me- snare me into
Their warm sick embrace
I'm at home there and the familiar lines
Are drawn on my face

The noise, the smoke, and the fire
Bring me down to that level
Choking off all I aspire to be
I take a knee
Married to this pain

I wonder
Why does it have to be this way?
Today is the day
I break free and say
I ascend

The light refracts true goodness, and love
I am at peace with the world
Content because
I've found all the joy
I've been searching for

In a picture, a letter, a laugh
From friends

I make plans for brighter days
I put my cares in the wind
Let them blow away
Cause today
I have grown beyond
All hopes and expectations
I have climbed to the top
Of Mt Doubt
And embraced
Life
