The Beginning Poem by Weldon Davis

The Beginning

I can survive the impossible
It starts with me
My decisions my choices
My contentment
Has become my salvation

Once I looked for material things
As a symbol of status
Once I needed to be inebriated
To fit in with the crowd
No More!

My life is my own, and I will
Cherish every single breath

It starts with me
It starts with me

To do the things
I sought out to do
In the first place

To be a good friend
To be a good father
A good role model
For all those hurting
Like I was hurting
To follow

It starts with me
To stay sober and keep commitments
To be a man of my word
To allow god to move in my life

It starts with me
-Yet-
I can not do this alone

I'm strong yet fragile
Intelligent yet still ignorant
Proud yet so very humble
To realize

That although I've made strides
Towards where I need to be
I'm still a good ways off
-And-
I may have hundreds of people
Who wish the best for this recovery of mine
I know

It starts with me
To survive the impossible
