The Barbecue Poem by Richard D Remler

The Barbecue

.................

Barbecued Pineapple smothered in cheese,
Simmering over the coals.
And Horseradish Honey from Horseradish Bees,
In all of our cereal bowls.
Porcupine Peanuts whipped into ice cream,
With Grandola Popcorn to spare.
Supper is ready - and this one's a dream!
So, come on along if you dare.

Ma gives old Uncle Rene a new fork,
And Uncle Rene smiles wide.
Aunt Irma offers him gravy and peas,
With a few camel bobs as a side.
Fernwick suggests that he try a pancake
Before the pancakes turn back into goo,
And I have to laugh as I watch her explain...
A something that he never knew.

Dad is still chewing on those fried jalapeños
That Aunt Shirley found in a tin.
She said they'd expired, but that doesn't matter,
Because she plans to use them again.

And Marlory won't sample the chocolate.
Malory will not drink the tea.
Malory won't taste the pineapple
Barbecued tasty as tasty can be.
Malory will not eat the pog cakes,
Or the porcupine peanuts she sees.
And Malory swears upside and down
She will not eat the Bitter-bean peas.
And Mom says she's proud of the effort
As she dabs on a touch of perfume.
Oh, she says the food looks mightytasty,
But she'll just eat yogurt in her room.

And Dad's got the grin of a hungry old man,
As he hears all the pears frying up in a pan.
And Jebs eying the mustard and cabbage soufflé,
And Malory's carefully backing away.

So, come on along, if you fancy a bite,
We're fetching on having a party tonight.
And there's nothing like Family, so don't you be shy.
It's not every day you see dragon-fruit fry.
