The Blue Eyed Deception Poem by Saalim Ali

The Blue Eyed Deception

Jack had received the call the night before. The stranger had offered him a million dollar to carry a package with him in the flight from Paris to Belgium. The stranger had said in a hoarse voice, ‘You have the potential to do this work, which is why you are chosen. Your ticket is ready. Every arrangement has been made. I hope that you won’t turn down the offer because you know that a million dollar is a big amount.’ Then there was a click and the line went dead.
Now, sitting wide awake in his bed Jack was thinking what to do next. The morning sun was pouring down through the window and illuminating it. Everything in the room was in place but, Jack was not okay. A million dollar was a big amount, the stranger was correct. This assignment could change his life. Jack had lost his job and the home lone was like a time bomb. Keeping his problems in his mind and without thinking about the consequences Jack made up his mind to do the job. Jack quickly made all the preparations and then finally gunned his Sedan down the streets of Paris straight to the international airport.
The horns were blaring and there was an unusual chaos at the airport because Christmas was round the corner. Jack’s thoughts were shattered by the same hoarse voice which he had heard the night before. ‘Hello, my friend. I knew it very well that you would turn up.’ Jack turned around and saw a man with approximately five feet and eight inches of height. The man was slim and sleek with a perfect body shape and a round face. He was wearing a black three piece suit with a small hat covering his bald skull. Jack could see the stranger’s shiny blue eyes through the round spectacles he was wearing. ‘But who are-’ Jack was interrupted. ‘Don’t ever dare to do that. No questions, only instructions to be followed.’ The stranger fished out an air ticket from his pocket and handed it to Jack. He handed Jack a black briefcase. ‘A man will be waiting for you at the air port, you have to give this package to him and your job is over. The cash will be transferred to your account. This package is nothing illegal, it has passed though all security checks.’ After saying this, the stranger disappeared into the stream of people.
With the mysterious package dangling down his hand, Jack headed inside. The flight was an hour late so Jack decided to have a cup of coffee at the cafeteria. Jack was again lost in his thoughts till a news channel at the cafe’s television caught his attention. The news reporter was saying that a terrorist has been arrested who was planning a bomb blast. He has given the bomb to a stranger on a flight to Belgium. Something caught Jack’s attention and his jaw dropped. Jack looked at the television screen and saw the shiny blue eyes through a pair of round spectacles.
Jack now knew everything. The man he had just met at the entrance of the airport was a terrorist and the briefcase he had handed him was a bomb. Jack was shocked. He was being used to kill people. But, the Jack knew he couldn’t do that. Without wasting any more time Jack took a full sprint, out of the airport he went straight to catch his Sedan and shot towards the Paradise River. He drove as fast as he could. Sweat was pouring down his forehead. Jack knew very little time was left before the bomb went off. The tires of the car screeched as Jack took a left and then there was a dead end. There was a traffic jam.
Jack was out of breath. He had been running and had covered almost one mile. He had Sedan in the traffic jam. His lungs were burning, but he had to run. The river was only few minutes away. Then finally Jack’s eyes met the glistening water of the Paradise River in the afternoon sun. Without wasting a minute, with his full strength Jack threw the briefcase into the water. After that there was a deafening sound. Then everything went black and Jack went unconscious.
Jack tried to open his eyes but he couldn’t because of the light. After a few minutes Jack could see a man dressed like a doctor and could hear some voices at the back. Then within a span of a second everything started to fall in place. Jack now knew that he was in a hospital. A doctor came near him and said, ‘Hello young man. You are very lucky. You just got minor injuries and that’s all. You saved lives of many people, you are a real hero. Come on man, get up and go outside, the world wants to see you.’ The doctor went outside to prepare discharge papers. Jack felt like he had achieved the goal of his life for which he had been assigned by the God.
