The story's told in four good books,
In Matthew, Mark, and Luke, and John.
On pages old, with humble looks,
The path of suffering went on.
To Pilate's court, then judgment came,
A whipping harsh, a crown of thorn.
Mocked by soldiers, called by name,
To Golgotha, the world forlorn.
Between two thieves, His fate was sealed,
Upon the cross, a painful stand.
Seven words, His love revealed,
A prayer for all, in every land.
He spoke of thirst, of Father's care,
Of comfort, "It is finished now."
Then breathed His last, beyond compare,
And bowed His weary, wounded brow.
In Joseph's tomb, His body laid,
A silent rest, the day was done.
But death's dark power was dismayed,
For victory by love was won.
His death, a gift, for sins of all,
A bridge to God, a sacrifice.
His rising bright, beyond death's call,
A promise new, a love so nice.
