The Caged Birds Don't Sing Poem by B U Afnan

The Caged Birds Don't Sing

"Write about The Sunset"
"Write of The Snow"
Of the times i was advised thus.I've lost count.

Shades of orange, dipped in tangerine and gold,
ripple still in the mercury of Jhelum
But all of it is tinged red
-in my head
The soft virgin snow, falls every winter, yes.
but splatters of scarlet on it, haunt my vision.
All the beauty is marred by the bars of my prison.

So, i am sorry if i don't sing to the tunes you like
The caged birds don't sing! you see?
People don't like hearing them sing
Their songs are tuneless, filled with screams.
When their throats are torn,
they tear bosom with their claws.
and beat their heads against the cage bars
They pull at the shackles against their ankles
till their cage is flooded, with their blood
and all the see is red

With clipped wings, they dream of flying
Soar to the skies, or die trying.
birds in cages will not sing!
they rage and rage against your setting sun
and go on till their freedom has come

Only their captors and buyers would rather they only sing
Of beauty and other pleasant things
all the while forgetting their cage
But the tears and wails of those caged
shall haunt their souls till they are handed their scrolls
