Oh, gather 'round me, comrades
And listen while I weep;
Of a war, a war, a war...
where hell is six feet deep.
Along the shore, the cannons roar.
Oh how can a soldier sleep?
The going's slow on Anzio
And hell is six feet deep.
Praise be to God for this captured sod
That's rich where blood does seep;
With yours and mine, like butchered swine;
And hell is six feet deep.
That death does wait
There's no debate;
No triumph will we reap
The crosses grow on Anzio,
Where hell is six feet deep.
I live in the UK but over the years I have probably seen most of his movies. Although I have rad bits of information about him I didn’t realise he was quite so decorated or that he died so young. What is certain is that he was an extremely brave man and a patriot. This is a weak tribute but is posted with great respect.
i am/was a huge fan of audie murphy. aside from being extemely good looking, he was a very good actor. over the years i've enjoyed his moview. re his poetry, excellent. audie was one very talented man.
Six feet is considered the depth at which scavengers can't smell and dig up the body, so graves are usually at least 6' deep.
Six feet is considered the standard depth of hole used when digging graves, there's no set maximum depth, but I believe it is enforced that a minimum of six feet be dug, but might depend from city to city, or state to state
I didn't know he wrote poems also. Seems to me men who can write like this must have a gentle soul. I love him and his memory.
Anybody else only know about this thanks to that Sabaton song To and Back?
