The Date From Hell Poem by Ruth Rutledge

The Date From Hell

He called me on the telephone.
All day he wouldn't leave me alone.
His calls kept coming and emails too.
He said I really can't wait to meet you.
I told him I couldn't go out.
I had to work that night.
He said he'd sit and watch me.
It would be a delight.
I said I'll meet you, we'll just ride around.
So we did, we talked and rode a little out of town.
We made a loop and back to the interstate.
He said he was glad I agreed to this date.
He said I'd really like to show you my house.
I said 'Let's go' not knowing he was a louse.
We walked in; it was a sight to behold,
many antiques, oh the stories they could have told.
We looked and we talked and had a pretty nice time.
Until the ole nut wanted to get out of line.
He wanted me to spend the night,
And that's what started the whole fight.
He said he thought I meant to stay.
To take me home would be a long way.
He said he had two beds and he'd leave on the light.
After all I had said 'I had all night'.
When I told him 'No' he sounded like thunder.
I pointed to a store and told him to pull over yonder.
Each mile he drove, the madder he got.
His words were harsh and he cussed a lot.
I said 'I'm sorry, it was all my fault'
Then he'd start again using words to assault.
When we finally drove up to my little house
I opened the door as quite as a mouse.
And I thanked the Lord for his protecting hand,
and for keeping me safe from this crazy man.
