The Days Go By/Without Any Need Of Me In Them Poem by Shalom Freedman

The Days Go By/Without Any Need Of Me In Them

The days go by
Without any need of me in them
I live and write
But the words mean less
And I mean more and more nothing
Time is the enemy now
And youth will never come again
An old old man
With a few years left
Who cannot summon the greatness
He in all those other years could never attain
Words and still more failing words yet
And the longing undying
And the dream not yet dead
And I here too hearing my own song
As if it were truly the beauty the reader should be inspired by.
